National Construction Authority Executive Director, Eng. Maurice Akech, joined counterparts from different institutions in a multi-sectoral consultative building inspections and compliance meeting that took place on 9th March, 2022 at the office of the County Executive Committee Member (CECM)- Land, Housing, Physical Planning, Municipal Administration & Urban Development, Kiambu County.

In attendance was the Governor Kiambu County, Hon. James Nyoro, as well as institutional heads and senior officials from the National Environment Management Authority, Institution of Engineers of Kenya, Architectural Association of Kenya, Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors, Kenya Institute of Planners, National Building Inspectorate, National Government Administration and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services.

The meeting was occasioned by the near collapse of a building under construction, on LR No. Dagoretti/Kinoo 6244 Kikuyu Sub County on Sunday, 6th March, 2022. This incident had also been preceded by several other incidents of building failure within Kiambu County.

A preliminary review of the main cause of the failure was conducted and was indicative of a gap in the building construction process in the County. Other bottlenecks impeding proper processes and proposed actions and interventions were discussed for effective and efficient planning, design and building inspection in accordance with the law and best practice.

“There has been a shift in the method of dealing with the challenge of construction failure in Kenya with key industry players now choosing a collaborative, multi-agency approach in curbing this menace,” said the Eng. Akech.

“NCA is committed to the fulfillment of its mandate, to regulate the construction industry and coordinate its development. We hope that this shift will fast track the total eradication of this problem for a well-planned, safe and sustainable built environment,” he added.

The Authority will continue to demonstratively seek the attainment of its vision and mission of having an innovative, well-coordinated and prosperous industry as well as regulate it through strategic interventions and partnerships for sustainable socio-economic development.
