NCA in new Inter-Agency Corporation Deal with ERC

May 29th, 2017 / by mjenzi

The Authority is in talks to ink a new deal with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). NCA officers, led by Research and Capacity Building General Manager Eng. Maurice Akech met with ERC officials on Thursday, 25th May to discuss areas of collaboration in joint enforcement and capacity building initiatives.

ERC are currently enforcing the provision on solar water installation for consumption of over 100 litres in both existing residential and commercial properties. The Commission issued a compliance notice whereby all developers must comply with installation within 6 months. Due to their limited presence across the country, ERC proposed an agreement with NCA whereby the two agencies can work together to ensure compliance.

The proposed joint collaboration will cover project registration, where NCA is to include the solar water installation provision for buildings under construction, and, consultancy services where NCA will be engaged to inspect solar water installation in existing buildings subject to approval.

Additional collaboration areas include the constitution of a Joint Enforcement Committee as well as sensitization and capacity building initiatives, where NCA will  invite ERC to all workshops and vice versa, and  ERC will  provide more awareness on solar water installation to assist in compliance.

The two agencies are preparing the necessary paperwork in order to make the proposed collaboration as beneficial to the industry as possible. This will be good news for all stakeholders in the industry, as inter-agency collaborations reduce the cost of doing business.

NCA currently requires all contractors who are registered to undertake Electrical and Solar Installation Works to already have the relevant license issued by ERC. Additionally, under project registration, the Authority requires all construction works in the Oil and Gas sector to also have the relevant license from ERC.
