NCA Partners with Makueni County, NITA and MSEA to Train Fundis

The National Construction Authority has partnered with the National Industrial Training Authority {NITA} and the Makueni County Government in order to train construction workers in the county.

The training, which commenced in August 2020, was officially launched on Monday, 14th September in Kathonzweni, Makueni County.

Prior to the launch, Makueni County Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana met with NCA Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech as well as representatives from NITA, the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) and cement-based solutions provider Euro-Fix, who are co-sponsoring the training.

Eng. Akech, who was accompanied by Research and Capacity Building General Manager Qs. David Mathu and other members of the management team expressed the Authority’s appreciation for the partnership.

“Nothing proceeds without construction, which is the key enabler of any development worldwide,” he noted, adding, “Construction cannot proceed without collaboration or compliance, which is why this partnership is critical.”

The Governor was equally effusive, stating, “A large percentage of the population in Makueni  falls between the ages of 15 and 35. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have lost their jobs. However, with upskilling, they are able to empower themselves by diversifying their skill set. This training programme has greatly improved morale in the community.”

NITA was represented by the Ag. Director of Industrial Training Mr. William Mwanza, who stated that this inaugural training served as a pilot, and the lessons learnt will serve to bolster the partnership framework, serving as a basis for similar trainings countrywide.

MSEA’s Director of Corporate Services Mr Simon Nyamolo noted that MSEA’s role in the training program is to facilitate the trainees with adequate resources to set up their trades, such as tools and equipment.

The training program covers the wider Makueni County including Kaiti, Kibwezi East, Mbooni and Kibwezi West Constituencies. The key areas of training covered include modern tile laying techniques, modern block laying techniques, modern interior and exterior finishes as well as modern plaster and plastering techniques. By the time the program winds up in October 2020, 3000 youth will have been trained, enabling the provision of a skilled workforce towards the attainment of affordable housing.

All graduates of the training program will receive accreditation from NCA.
